Q: Could this be prostate cancer or testicular cancer?
My boyfriend is 32 and has been having a burning sensation(not too severe) when he urinates and ejaculates. He says his penis always fills full but it obviously isn’t as he has been emptying it. His urine has been coming out at about between 100-400mls each time, which i am not sure is normal. When we have sex, he says his penis feels sore and his insides feel like they are being crushed with pressure… he says his orgasm is very intense and not a lot of sperm is coming out. He thinks he has cancer… anyone else had symptoms like this??? We have a docs appointment on monday for him. Isn’t a UTI in men very very rare???? It’s not an STD. Also, his testes are a little bit sensitive.

A: He almost certainly has a urinary tract infection. Contrary to what you think, these are very common in guys, especially in during childhood and puberty. The infection is often not even noticed and usually clears up on its own without treatment after 4 or 5 days. The most common way of getting a UTI is the same as it is with women … with bacteria transferred from the butt on toilet paper, or from fingers that have been in contact with the anus. As bacteria are becoming more and more resistant to anti-biotics, doctors are reluctant to prescribe them for minor ailments, so your boyfriend will probably be told to leave the infection to clear up on its own and drink plenty of water. Drinking cranberry juice is often recommended to help kill off the infection.

Q: Will Provenge be approved on or before May 15 by the FDA?
Provenge, manufactured by Dendreon Corporation, is a new treatment for prostate cancer. It is the first drug/treatment that is considered a vaccine. Instead of killing cells (bad AND good) like chemo, it actually augments the immune system by training white ‘killer t-cells’ to attack the cancer. In clinical trials Provenge tripled the chances of a man surviving past 3 years. It also had a median survival advantage of 4.5 months for men whose average life expectancy at this late stage of prostate cancer is approximately 22 months. Side effects are only flu-like symptoms that last for 2-3 days.

A: I haven’t heard anything in over a month. I do know it’s on the fast-track (which can be good and bad) and is in review to begin promotion. Promotion approval means it will be approved very soon.
