Q: prostate cancer is younger men?
Is it more widespread than first thought? Since my dad’s got prostate cancer, I’ve been reading everything I can about it. Whilst my dad was in his mid-sixties when he first got it, I’ve seen an increasing amount of posts on forums and on here about men having it in their 40s, their early 40s infact. Does anyone know any statistics for how many men this age get it? Is it more common than first thought perhaps? Do men need to be tested earlier for it do you think?
I know it is mostly thought of as an “old mans disease” with most men getting it in their 60s and 70s, but like I say I have read instances of young men getting it that has made me think that maybe this is more common than first thought.
EDIT-I meant to write “in” younger men, if you didn’t get that! Damn, I thought I read the question before I posted it aswell!
I guess you’re right Denise-since the PSa test is very inaccurate anyway, earlier testing probably wouldn’t help.
A: Men’s lifetime risk for prostate cancer is 1 in 6 and his risk from dying from it is 1 in 34. Of all prostate cancers 8.7% occur under 55 and 0.3% occur under 45 years old. This is based on all prostate cancers in the US from 2002 – 2006. Our recommendations do not need to be changed. Our incidence rate increase after we started using the PSA as part of our screening and our death rate peaked in 1991 with 27 deaths in every 100,000 accordingly. However, since that time is has slowly declined.
Q: Prostate Cancer – More Info Needed?
My brother has prostate cancer. He is 44 years old. He had symptoms for over a year and finally went to a doctor when it was too painful to walk. A biopsy shows that 75% of his prostate is cancerous and 25% is precancerous. His prostate cancer has no PSA reading. The doctor told us his cancer is an aggressive cancer. A scan showed some of his lymph nodes were swollen, but it may be because of a biopsy… The doctors did not put him on hormones.
My question is: Is it normal not to put a person on hormones before they are scheduled for prostate removal? (He’s scheduled next month for surgery). Has anyone else had experience with this type of prostate cancer in a younger man?? What type of experience did you have?
A: I am 48 yo. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in july. Of the 12 biopsy samples taken, 7 came back positive for cancer, so more than half the prostate was cancerous. The gleason score (mine was 7) and the cancer staging (mine is stage II) help determine how aggressive the cancer is and how likely it is that it has spread beyond the prostate. My Dr. recommended surgery. I sought a second opinion and decided on surgery, but decided on a new procedure that is less invasive and easier to heal from with fewer chances of the side effects associated with prostatectomy, incontinence and impotence. The surgery is Robotic Laparoscopic Radical Prosatectomy, I would recommend you research this as an option for your brother. Sometimes a Dr. will start with Hormone Therapy to shrink the size of the tumor before surgery, but it is not commonly done. If the cancer is thought to have spread beyond the prostate after surgery there may be follow up with Radiation and Hormone Therapy as well.
I am sorry to hear of your brothers diagnosis,
this must be a difficult time for you and your family. A diagnosis of Prostate Cancer is devastating and life changing. The support of family and friends was a great comfort to me in making treatment decisions and going through the treatment process. I wish you the best of luck.
Q: Women do you know men are dying extremely young because no one cares about mens health?
I read that millions of men are dying before the age of 30 because there is nothing for mens health, and men get treated poorly in hospitals and theres no treatments for prostate cancer or testicular cancer.
How do you feel about this??
A: .
Q: natural therapies for prostate cancer?
If we note that in young men with normal testosterone levels we don’t see prostate cancer why do seek to decrease testosterone? There are many natural products out there to balance hormone levels. Metagenics makes a product called Testralin for men and Estrofactors for Women I had high estrogen levels took Estrofactors for 1 1/2 years added DHEA 100mg a day and in 30 day had the estrodial drop to 270, adding testosterone dropped it to a perfect level.
As we get older between aging and diet which is stripping our bodies of its vitamins and minerals we need to supplement. Sometimes we need to megadose using a doctor that will test levels to get back to peak levels. Use a doctor that is willing to work with you and test your blood as you go. Realize that nothing happens overnight. It all takes time. I allowed 6months or so between blood tests for things to work. I cut back on the DHEA to once a week once I was balanced.
A: From the book, The Reader’s Digest Family Guide to Alternative Medicine, page 287, one can read the following:
1) Accupuncture
Practicioners claim success in relieving prostate problems by using pressure points on the bladder, large intestines, spleen, kidney, conception ang governor meridians. In addition, treatment by Moxibustion may be applied.
2) Herbal Medicine
For non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, and difficulty in passing water, herbalists may use diuretic herbs such as couch grass, horsetail or saw palmetto, to promote discharge of the urine.
3) Naturopathy
Hot and cold compresses, or sitz baths, are key part of naturopathic treatment of prostate disorder. Regular exercise is a preventive measure for enlarged prostate symptoms, and supplement of zinc may reduce the swelling about 15mg a day is the usual recommended dose, or perhaps eating 30g of pumpkin seeds daily. Plenty of fluids may also help – but cut down on alcohol, strong tea and coffee.
4) Biochemic Tissue Salts
Try Nat sulph when it is difficult or impossible to retain urine; Calc phos for a frequent need to urinate; and Mag phos when the need is constant when walking, or even standing.
Q: Why do people say masturbation is good?
Other people say that frequent masturbation in young men is linked to higher risk of early prostate cancer, but it lowers prostate cancer risk for men in their 50s.
A: “People” say masturbation is good simply because it is. I say it too, and I recommend that you join the common trend of frequent masturbation. Most guys do it 2 or 3 times a day, some much more.
Masturbation probably reduces the risks of prostate and testicular cancer because it allows for frequent discharge of seminal fluid which would otherwise collect in areas not designed for long term storage. Wet dreams alleviate this problem eventually by creating an automatic discharge, but the result is messy.
Masturbation is a good and healthy activity. It will improve your physical and mental health.
Q: Women versus Men?
I have been thinking and us women have the short end of the stick… here is why
Women-
Periods
Child Birth
Dealing with dead beat dads who don’t pay child support/don’t take care of their kids
Cervical Cancer(at very young ages, very hard to cure)
Ovarian Cancer(at very young ages, very hard to cure)
Uterine Cancer
Breast Cancer(no need to say anything here)
menopause
HPV
PID
Heart Disease(#1 killer in women)
Men
Prostate cancer(by time they have to worry about this they are so old it doesn’t matter)
Colon cancer(which is VERY curable if caught early on)
and OH MY GOD…………..IF THEY KNOCK UP A CHICK THEY “HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF IT” OR ATLEAST PAY CHILD SUPPORT…..THAT IS NOT FAIR HUH? JUST BECAUSE I MADE THAT BABY SHOULDN’T MEAN I NEED TO TAKE CARE OF IT……..
ALSO, MEN AVOID TRYING TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR KIDS LIKE THE POOR KID IS CANCER. I READ A QUESTION ON HERE WHERE A GUY ASKED “HOW CAN I GET MY CHILD SUPPORT LOWERED”. EXCUSE ME?
Oh yeah I did forget Yeat Infections..sorry
Oh yeah I did forget Yeat Infections..sorry
Actually I did not get left buy a man. Why does it always have to be the womens responsibility for birth control? People get on women more about birth control than men.
A: You forgot something……. YEAST INFECTION……and god forbid that their balls be kicked
Q: Is it unhealthy to masturbate alot?
I frequently masturbate on an average of 4-6 times a week. Some days I’m in the mood to do it, some days I don’t feel like it. I’m 13 and masturbate on a frequent basis. Some sources say that masturbation in young men helps prevent prostate cancer and frequent masturbation at a young age can increase the risk of prostate cancer. Also, I have been masturbating for well over a year now and if this IS unhealthy, any ideas on how to stop it? (I would say it’s an addiction but I’m not sure)
A: You’re right, it’s an addiction. ( I had it, too.) Most won’t admit it because it’s inexpensive, feels great, is fun, and most guys do it. Funny that all guys will tell you how they can’t go more than a few days without masturbating but nobody says it’s an addiction.
You’re right, there’s now convincing evidence that masturbation has any real long-term benefits. If there are, I’d be inclined to say that the addiction itself is worse for you psychologically than any potential benefits.
-masturbation becomes your only stress relief, which is actually an artificial one because all it does is satisfy your need for the addiction.
-it raises your sex drive
-it will be harder to have a proper sexual relationship with a girl later on because you will be used to just satisfying yourself
-addiction / no self-control leads to depression and low self-esteem
-masturbation is time consuming, and you will find yourself doing that instead of other more important things
What worked for me:
-exercise
-hobbies
-spending lots of time with friends and family
-sleeping with my door open
-not locking the bathroom door
-refuse to move until the urge passes
-admit my problem so that I wasn’t quitting alone
I’ve enjoyed having more self-control and confidence since I’ve quit, I no longer feel like I have to give in to all sexual arrousal, and I don’t waste time that I should spend doing other things.

Q: Dying Young?
I did not know what to make of this mornings news. A mixture of emptiness (not knowing what to think) and shock still pains my insides. My childhood crush, who I haven’t seen in over 2 years is possibly dying from prostate cancer. It has spread to his stomach.
I would like to ask if it is common among young men (20),
and if genetics plays a major role?
(He’s father died of prostate cancer before he was born.)
Does he have any chances of survival?
A: Speaking as a parent of a teenager diagnosed with advanced cancer . . yes, it is certainly possible for healthy young men to get cancer. Unfortunately I know many already who have passed away from this disease. I also know many who have survived and are currently no evidence of disease. There are actually very few cancers that can be linked to genetics. The rule of thumb is that patients that have a direct connection such as father and son, uncles or brothers all having the identical type of cancer (prostate) than there is probably a hereditary factor. But if the disease is random . . father with lung cancer and son with prostate .. than there is no connection.
Hereditary Prostate Cancer

The most common response to finding out that someone young has cancer . . is that . . how is this possible? Well, the problem is that adolenscents and young adults are the ‘forgotten’ cancer patients. They are neither young children, nor are they older adults . . and their cancers are very different. The medical community has done a fairly decent job warning older adults about breast cancer, lung cancer, and colon cancer . . in fact people forget that there are over 200 different types of cancer. The young do not generally get breast, lung, or colon cancer . . instead young adults get bone cancer, leukemia, and the germ cell cancers associated with testicular or ovarian cancers. For some reason people think that young healthy teens and adult will not get cancer .. but they do . . and they die from it, because by the time it is found it is already stage IV and very advanced. Young people can ignore the effects and symptoms of cancer for a very, very long time. They are in better health than older adults and can withstand the aches, the pains, and never notice weight loss . . many young adults are trying to lose weight anyway, so they never make the connection.

A good resource is actually the Lance Armstrong Live Strong site. Lance Armstrong was 25 years old when diagnosed with stage IV testicular cancer. You can find more information about the disease and young adults on his site:
Live Strong

Hope your friend is in treatment. Remember cancer is not the death sentence that it once was. Lance Armstrong was cured almost ten years ago and his disease was advanced. There is always hope. The young also have an amazing ability to withstand treatment far better than older adults.
Best wishes.

I am getting confused already. Kiss in the forehead, dinners, telling me his house is my house…. I still feel we are just friends because he says we are. He is married and is currently battling with cancer. The worst for a man at such a young age–Prostate Cancer.
A: I don’t think he loves you in an intimate way, considering he’s married as well. He probably means that theres no one out there that can replace you as a friend.

Q: When should I start checking for cancer????
Ok maybe Im not the guy to be asking this, but I am somewhat paranoid about my health and would like to know WHAT cancers MEN should be looking out for, and WHEN I should start?—prostate is the one that gets the most coverage……usually colon I think after that.
Just let me know WHAT cancers and WHEN to search for them.
Males in my family do not have any history of cancer, although both of my grandmothers died from breast cancer…….the men in my family tend to have higher blood pressure and heart problems.
Oh by the way Im young…….23……..BUT PLEASE TAKE MY QUESTIONS SERIOUSLY!!!! I KNOW IM A LITTLE PARANOID BUT PLZ ANSWER HONESTLY!!!!
A: Hey there, I’m also 23 and I have a nutrition background and I’ve worked in a hospital, so I do kind of have experience.
I say that right now don’t be paranoid because even though you feel like your body is going through something, it really isn’t. Just try to eat healthy and exercise regularly, you’ll be fine.
I’ve seen men in their late 20’s and early 30’s with either colon cancer or brain tumors and such. Just going to the regular check ups is enough and if you feel you have pain or something is out of the ordinary, thats when you should go see a doctor. Prostate cancer is something you shouldn’t worry until you’re 40+ years old.
Hope i’ve been some help and don’t freak out! Live your life and enjoy every second of it =)
Q: Judeo-Christians does your God approve of his creation self pleasuring themselves to orgasm ?
I mean do we really need to enforce marriage and procreation if we want to indulge in solitary sex.
Who are we harming?
Please do not quote from the Jewish acquired section of the Bible in Genesis regarding Onan as it is clear Onanism is a misnomer as most Bible Scholars now conclude that God slew Onan for Coitus Interruptus or more specifically for refusing to impregnate his dead brothers wife.
Onan was not an Onanist in the colloquial sense.
Paul, that old fraud, issues threats against abusers of themselves not inheriting the kingdom of God but masturbation is not self abuse as in most cases it relieves stress and prevents Prostrate cancer in men by removing harmful carcinogenic material from the testes which is a major factor in Prostate cancer in men.
You cannot say the God whom you believe in did not design human sexuality not to be a solitary experience for why would this God be stupid or blind enought to provide humanity with erogenous zones linked to touch and imagination.
Catholics may state section 2352 of the official cathchism of their organisation, which not all Judeo literal orthodox Christians believe in , is the guidlines in that it says masturbation is,”the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive pleasure”,yet this edit is not from God as such but from men in a male dominated organisation with a history of sexual abuse carried out by it’s clergy on its flock..namely young boys sexually abused by Priests.
Maybe masturbation would assist these celibates to get their repressed sexual issues taken in hand…no pun intended.
In Ancient Egypt even Pharoah himself spilled his seed upon the Nile as part of his divine royal duties to ensure a good crop for the coming harvest.
Pre Christian Pagans and other belief systems appear to be indifferent to masturbation so surely masturbation where did the sin aspect come from?
It is unfair that this sin has been pushed upon believers in this nonsense.
We can only egaculate to procreate.I suggest to believers in this concept that today it is untenable and unworkable as most Judeo Christians of the literal orthodox bent do not follow this arcane rule and surely the time has come to change the script to reflect modern sexual mores and keep the population at a sustainable level and save mens lives from the lingering death of Prostate cancer.
A: Being the product of a puritanical mother with Victorian values I have spent a lifetime of guilt regarding sexual pleasures, be them masturbatory or otherwise.
Q: GNC Mega Men Sport Vitamin?
Hi everyone, this past weekend I went to GNC to pickup some Vitamin C Pills. While I was there the sales guy was telling me about the Mega Men daily multi vitamins. I told him I take Centrum Performance and I’m not interested at this time. The last couple nights I have been reading comparisons and reviews on Centrum and Mega Men. What I read is that most of the Centrum brands including the one I take has Iron as one of the supplements and that extra Iron in mens body can cause prostate cancer. So today after work I stopped in at a GMC Store and talked to a Sales Guy and was told that the Mega Men Sport would be the best for me, so I bought a bottle of it. Now that I got it home I was looking at the ingredients and notice it has Creatine in it. I’m kinda scared about taking it now do to long term side affects of Creatine. Some of the side affects I found is mood swings in young people I’m 23, and Kidney damage. So I’m just wondering what you guys think should I keep the product, or return it for the regular Mega Men that doesn’t have Creatine, or just return it to get my money back and forget about GNC all together. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks
A: Huh?
Q: Dying too soon?
I did not know what to make of this mornings news. A mixture of emptiness (not knowing what to think) and shock still pains my insides. My childhood crush, who I haven’t seen in over 2 years is possibly dying from prostate cancer. It has spread to his stomach.

(He’s father died of prostate cancer before he was born.)
Does he have any chances of survival?
A: I know my physician told me once the dangers of prostate cancer, and how he had detected it in the early stages in himself and ended up surviving it. He was in his early 20’s when it happened to him so I would assume that your friend has a good chance of survival. You may think about visiting him in an effort to make him a little happier to see an old friend.
