Q: Is there an alternative treatment for prostate with high PSA levels?

A: What determines what is a “high” PSA level in part is relative to what country you are in, and what age you are….

For example, my father had a reading of 17 – which is considered very high here – however, he went to see a doctor in Canada, and they didn’t even blink at it -they said for a man his age that was normal.

So a lot of it depends on the paradigm your doctor was taught.

In other words, don’t freak out about it just yet – get a biopsy done before you worry.

Q: What does it mean if a man has had a radical prostecomy a year ago and now is registering high psa levels?

A: Strong possibility of cancer, I’m afraid.
Talk to your doctor about going on a
high alkaline diet. It might help.

Q: Simple queston: Does a high PSA level of say 11, always mean cancer?
My husband had a biopsy but we are still waiting for the results. The pathologist has sent it to another pathologist for a second opinion. Why? What does that mean? Anyway, has anyone ever heard of some having a PSA level this high and not having cancer? I appreciate any answer.

A: Has he had a baseline PSA done before? If the 11 is significantly highter than his baseline, then that would be cause for alarm. As far as a second opinion, I think that most physicians would want to confirm their suspicions prior to making a diagnosis such as malignant prostate tumor. Or, maybe the pathologist didn’t have any findings consistant with a diagnosis of malignant tumor, so he is confused as to why the PSA would be elevated. At any rate, good luck and keep in mind that there are many treatments available for that type of problem and many men have it treated and are able to return to a normal, healthy life.

Q: My adult male friend has prostate cancer 4yrs now & his psa levels are 4.4?
Just recently he had the surgery to cut out his balls however, the cancer has spread to his bones mostly in his upper right body & all in his lower spine. He’s having a lot of pain in his lower back. I heard, the high psa levels he has is not a good thing. His wife wants him to start making necessary arrangements but he refuses. Can anyone give some feedback on what stage he’s in or how long he may have. thank you

A: He is a stage 4. You are not giving enough information to guess at how long he may have.

Q: If you have an elevated PSA in a prostate test, what are the odds that it’s cancer?
My dad (age 55) had a prostate test and his PSA levels were high. He was referred to a urologist for a biopsy, were still waiting on the results. I just want to know what the liklihood of it being cancer is. Do high PSA levels mean it’s most likely cancer?

A: PSA is secreted by prostate tissue, healthy or diseased. As men age, it’s normal for their prostates to gradually enlarge, and their PSA levels to rise. If your father’s urologist has estimated the volume of his prostate, you can calulate his expected PSA by multiplying the volume in cc’s by 0.066. If his actual PSA is higher than calculated, then the chance are good that cancer will be found.

Q: How can you have a PSA level of 40 after your prostrate has been removed?
My father is 80 and had his prostrate removed 12 years ago due to cancer. Now he is told he has the high PSA level. How is that possible?

A: there may be cells in another part of the body.

Q: prostate psa levels at 9?
my dad has high levels of psa 9 I think it was ..then it when down to 7

can my dad be saved? or is it to late.. thank you

A: There are many men with levels that high and higher. He could very well live a long life and die from something else.
I suggest you google Prostate Cancer Support Groups +your town. My husband is quite active in one of these groups. They meet on a regular basis and your father can talk to people who have the same problem as he does.

Q: What are the normal to high numbers for the PSA level? My husbands is above 9, is this serious?

Q: High PSA level…?
My brother just recently got his blood test back from his PSA and it was at 50. Last year it was 4. I know that this is not good. Really what does it mean??Thanks for all info…I appreciate it!

A: It means that he really needs to follow up with his doc! PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen……and elevated PSA “could” indicate prostrate cancer……..please note COULD! Definitely needs to follow up on this though!

Q: If someone has a 6.1 PSA, is that a high level risk for prostate cancer?
My father, 50 years old, has a 6.1 PSA and wants to know whether it’s risky at the moment. What can he do to stop that number from increasing?

A: I would say it is the watchful range. I would suggest getting another PSA done in 30-45 days to see if there is any change.

They say eating a low fat diet, mainly eliminating dairy products is good. Taking Vitamin D3 has been found to help prostate cancer & the supplement Saw Palmetto can help shrink the prostate gland. The only other thing I can add is if possible to try & buy hormone free milk (Horizon is a good brand) & hormone free eggs( Eggland Best are good). Prostate Cancer is a hormone driven cancer(Testosterone) & the more hormonal influences he can cut out of his diet, the better off he will be. Meat also has alot of hormones injected into it by the cattle farmers, if possible grass fed, hormone-free meat is best to eat for the least side effects.Hope this helps! Good luck!

Q: Has Anyone Had An Elevated PSA Level From 4 to 10 And It Turn Out OK.?
I recently had a PSA level of 5.1 I did a follow up 6 weeks later and it went down to 4.4 Has anyone been tested with high PSA levels and it ended up nothing was wrong?
The urologist gave me the finger examine and said my prostate felt fine. Then I told him about my PSA test I had prior to seeing him and he was ready to schedule me for a biopsy. That concerned me a little because from what everything I have read, this is slightly elevated. I told him I want to do another PSA test in 6 to 8 weeks and see what those results were. he agreed.

A: An increase in your PSA doesnt necessarily mean you have prostate cancer. You could have BPH, benign prostate hypertrophy, its where your prostate is enlarged and other than urinating problems its harmless. Stress can make it go higher or it could have been the lab.. Your dr will probably want to check out your prostate with a digital, finger message thru the anus. If it feels bumby or enlarged he will schedule you for a biopsy to determine whats going on. A biopsy is the only real way to determine why an elevation in your PSA test. It happens all the time and dont worry, it prob is nothing. Usually we worry when it goes from 4 to 400. Im sure your fine, good luck

Q: prostate screening and false PSA TESTS?
Does ejaculation the night before a test or day of cause higher PSA levels.
Everything I’m reading says it does, Just wanted anyones personal take

A: No, but some medications like finasteride will change the PSA results.
Are you having a PSA test?
Best wishes

Q: False positive and false negative probability question?
Approximately 25% of Canadian men in the 50’s have prostate cancer. High level of PSA in the blood is used as a test for prostate cancer. Approximately 20% of men with prostate cancer have normal PSA levels and two out of three men without prostate cancer have high PSA levels. Calculate the probabilities that a PSA test on a Canadian man in his 50’s will result in
a) false positive
b) false negative

Thanks for the help :)

A: P(had) = 25% = 1/4
P(not) = 3/4
P(normallhad) = 20% = 1/5
P(highlnot) = 2/3

qa
P(false positive)
= P(positive but not) / P(positive)
= P(highlnot)*P(not) / [P(highlnot)*P(not) + P(highlhad)*P(had)]
= 2/3 * 3/4 / [2/3 * 3/4 + 4/5 * 1/4]
= 1/2 / [1/2 + 1/5]
= 5/7

qb
P(false negative)
= P(negative but had) / P(negative)
= 1/5 * 1/4 / [1/5 * 1/4 + 1/3 * 3/4]
= 1/20 / [1/20 + 1/4]
= 1/6

Q: prostate cancer psa levels?
my psa level is 2554.40 how high can it go
they tell me this is just a number don’t worry

A: The closer you are to the number 0 the better off you are. Your doc should already have you scheduled for for some type of treatment and prostate removal with a number this high. If your doc is not acting on this immediately find a new urologist ASAP. My dad has prostate cancer which came back in his soft tissue even though his prostate was removed. His PSA went back up to 40 but with radiation and now with hormone shots it is under control and down to about a number 1. The sooner they start treatment the better off you will be.

Q: i has told from my dr that my PSA level was a whopping 55 is that unusually high and is their a probable cause?

A: This is a very high reading. I had mine checked recently and it was 1.5, and i have a significantly enlarged prostate. PSA levels can spike from having sex, or vigorous physical activity before the test. It seems like a follow up test in another week or so would be a good idea. If you have another high reading, the docs may want to get an image of the prostate or maybe recommend a biopsy.
