Q: I need to know about symptoms after Prostate Cancer surgery?
My husband had complete prostate removal surgery 5-05 and has the usual problems associated with that but has another side effect his Dr’s. wont even discuss.

His legs became very weak right after surgery and remain so, After asking other men (3) who have had the same surgery and them experiencing the same symptoms why wont the medical community discuss this? Any ideas?

By the way….He had to use the VA Health Care System and his cancer came from service in Vietnam.

A: Has he had his PSA tested recently?

Before I received radiation treatment for my prostate I received medication to stop my body from using testosterone. At the same time I was given the medication I was given a bone density test because the medication could also cause osteoporosis. I’d check the side effects for all the medication he’s taking.

One in six men have had prostate cancer before they die so I’m surprised to hear that the government now links it to service in Vietnam, but I feel all the people who severed in Vietnam deserve all the help from the government that they can possibly provide.

Q: Will a PSA of 135 be accompanied by symptoms in prostate cancer?
My friend’s spouse has had prostate cancer for three years without treatment. His PSA has climbed to 135. How soon will he suffer uncomfortable symptoms and what might they be??

A: You can’t tell from the number.
There is no threshold number that is associated with developing symptomatology.
The symptoms, when they occur, depend on where the tumor is growing. Most often it is in the bones. In that case, the symptom will be bone pain.

Q: What are the symptoms of prostate cancer ?
My brother is over the age of 50, making frequent trips to the bathroom during the night? these symptoms may indicate that he has a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate or a cancerous enlargement of the prostate, How to determine , is there any other symptoms?

A: Most prostate cancers are not symptomatic until they are in later stages, however, when symptoms do develop, they may include frequent trips to the bathroom, increased urinary urgency (meaning the urge comes suddenly and can’t be held very long), erectile difficulties, dribblling after urination, pelvic and/or lower back pain. Some of these symptoms are also the same for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) which is the non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate. The only way to tell for sure is to have a physical exam (A DRE – doctor inserts lubricated finger in rectum to feel the prostate gland for any abnormalities, humiliating, yes, but it is not that bad and can save your life!!!), blood tests for PSA (prostate specific antigen detected in the blood, and when elevated can suggest the presence of prostate cancer), transrectal ultrasound, and/or biopsy if the other tests are suspicious. As an aside, any man over 40 or with any urinary difficulties should begin prostate cancer screening. When caught early, it is highly curable. When caught too late, it is not. Often when younger men get it, it tends to be more aggressive so get checked!!!!

Q: men who had prostate cancer or showed symptoms but didnt have prostate cancer?
couple weeks ago i was reading a medical book and was looking for symtoms of prostate cancer. and my dad shows all the symptoms. he is 43. he went to the doctors in october and they said there was no cancer cells found. he went last friday and they found nothing. im trying my best to stay positive but it really bothers me that he shows the symptoms. men, did this happen to you before or had prostate cancer?

A: shows the symptoms…. how does he do that? The only thing that will show is when he has a PSA or a biopsy , other than that there are no symtoms to show.

Q: What are the symptoms of prostate cancer? Are there any tests you can do on your own?

A: From starman’s google: A need to urinate frequently, especially at night;
Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine;
Weak or interrupted flow of urine;
Painful or burning urination;
Difficulty in having an erection;
Painful ejaculation;
Blood in urine or semen; or
Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.

Any of those symptoms is a test you can do on your own. Doesn’t mean cancer though, means enlarged prostate.

Q: What are the symptoms of prostate cancer and once detected, what is the survival rate?

A: The story of prostate cancer is a complex one. It has been suggested that if all men lived to be 100 years old, a biopsy of their prostate glands would ALL show at least a small cancer focus. Most men with prostatic cancer are probably asymptomatic and most men who develop prostate cancer actually die from other causes.

This has produced a number of issues around screening, which is carried out in men over 50 years in the US but not in the UK. About 20% of all men screened have a suspicious blood test result, PSA, about half of these when biopsied ( the biopsy process itself is very painful and has side serious risks and side effects,) have tumour. However it remains unclear as to whether treating Gleason grades of prostate cancer 0 and 1 affects outcomes. This is important as management is unpleasant, highly invasive and has many side effects as well.

Q: what is the symptoms of having a prostate cancer and colon cancer?
i have been experiencing a stinging pain in my rectum and i even have a blood coming out along with my bowel,i consulted a general physician .the doctor said it could be a hemoroids,is it possible that i have a colon cancer or prostate cancer. please help me understand. it worries me very much . hope to find answers here. thank you.

A: Your doc is probably right. If you are seeing bright red blood it is very low in the GI system and the pain you describe is likely from a constipated stool passing. If you bowel movements are very hard and sometimes in small formed balls that is constipation. Straining at stool causes hemorrhoids and hemorrhoids can bleed. Increase the fiber in your diet or try a stool softener and it should help this problem.
Prostate problems present symptoms of having trouble with the other plumbing….peeing. When the prostate gland enlarges it blocks the urine and either frequent small amounts of urine or having trouble urinating are the symptoms. It has nothing to do with bowel movements.

Q: prostate cancer symptoms?
Is bleeding out of the anas (very little) a sign of prostate cancer?

A: Yes it is. But then again it is also the symptomology of an anal fissure and or hemmorhoids. With the fissure and roids being more common than the PC. See your doctor to confirm.

Good luck!

A: Hi Ravilio Casa and thanks for writing, from what you have shared with me I’m sorry but I would guess that your Father will probably pass away within two months.

Below is an excerpt which I think should answer all your questions. I hope this helps and I wish you the very best during the coming days and weeks. God Bless.

Preparing for Approaching Death

When a person enters the final stage of the dying process, two different dynamics are at work which are closely interrelated and interdependent. On the physical plane, the body begins the final process of shutting down, which will end when all the physical systems cease to function. Usually this is an orderly and undramatic progressive series of physical changes which are not medical emergencies requiring invasive interventions. These physical changes are a normal, natural way in which the body prepares itself to stop, and the most appropriate kinds of responses are comfort enhancing measures.

The other dynamic of the dying process at work is on the emotional-spiritual-mental plane, and is a different kind of process. The spirit of the dying person begins the final process of release from the body, its immediate environment, and all attachments. This release also tends to follow its own priorities, which may include the resolution of whatever is unfinished of a practical nature and reception of permission to “let go” from family members. These events are the normal, natural way in which the spirit prepares to move from this existence into the next dimension of life. The most appropriate kinds of responses to the emotional-spiritual-mental changes are those which support and encourage this release and transition.

A: None of the above. They may be symptoms of cancer once it spreads from the prostate to other areas. I had no symptoms and prostate cancer was detected as a result of annual physical and blood check for cholesterol. My PSA went from 1.5 to 4.5 in 12 months. Doctor ordered biopsies and cancer was detected in 1 of 12 areas. The Gleason score was 4+4=8 (aggressive tumor) I had the prostate removed a month later. They found cancer in the sections the biopsies missed.
I was 59 when it was removed. With no symptoms.
